(For comparison, the highway system as a whole might have a "farebox recovery" rate of 51%.) This is with a railroad that is in some ways very similar to BART in California (electric MU trains powered by third rail, grade-seperated, heavily automated, parts of it underground in the downtown area, surface and elevated running elswhere), and as such, it pays for its own track and facility maintenance (including some large stations, all with some sort of multiple passenger levels, and some with multiple track levels, too). This is something the bus operation doesn’t do, as it runs on public streets paid for in the usual manner from property taxes in the area. This system has no BRT or exclusive lanes here other than some operation on HOT lanes (a small proportion of the route mileage). Chances are if there were such facilities, the bus operation would look even worse; those exclusive lanes don't exactly build or maintain themselves. . .<br /><br />D. P.
